Can civilians own a CheyTac M200 Intervention sniper rifle?

There are no federal restrictions on civilian ownership of a CheyTac M200 Intervention sniper rifle, though local laws may place restrictions on ownership. Consult a firearms lawyer in your jurisdiction if you have any questions.

Is .408 CT more powerful than .50 BMG?

To answer this question we need to set parameters for the term “powerful”. If the question is one of muzzle velocity, then no, the .408 CT does not produce more power than the .50 BMG. Not only does the .50 BMG fire a heavier bullet, it also can produce more than 14,000 ft-lbs of muzzle energy compared to the .408 CT’s more modest, approximately 7,000 ft-lbs of muzzle energy. 

The .50 BMG remains a superior round when the goal is downrange anti-materiel application, but it is also a less accurate round, and it drops a lot faster than .408 CT does. 

What’s the difference between .375 and .408 CT?

Both of these cartridges are very closely related, but the long and short of it is that the .408 CT is loaded with larger, heavier bullets. It retains more energy downrange but it drops a little faster than its lighter cousin does. 

By contrast, the .375 CT fires a lighter bullet so it shoots flatter, but it doesn’t retain the same energy to the target. Therefore, if the goal is simply accuracy and greater range, the .375 might take the edge, whereas the .408 CT has an advantage when it comes to dispatching targets. 

Otherwise, both are loaded with “Balanced Flight Projectiles” (see below) which are CNC-machined bullets, machined from solid copper, which exhibit peerless cross-sectional consistency in density and excellent radial symmetry, delivering exceptional stability in flight and accuracy.

What’s the effective range of a CheyTac M200?

The effective range of a CheyTac M200 Intervention sniper rifle, regardless of chambering, is greater than 2500 meters, giving it an effective range greater than a mile. With appropriate training and optics, a skilled shooter can engage man-sized targets at ranges in excess of a mile. 

How bad is recoil?

Both the .375 and .408 CheyTac cartridges produce considerable recoil, but there are two factors that help mitigate this. One is the weight of the rifle. The CheyTac Intervention M200 weighs more than 30 pounds, even without a scope, which on its own absorbs most of the recoil produced by the cartridge. 

The other thing is the rifle comes with a threaded barrel that’s muzzle brake-ready, and we sell ours with muzzle brakes pre-installed. Combined with the weight of the rifle, the muzzle brake helps to considerably reduce recoil, making it manageable for most shooters. 

What are balanced flight projectiles?

One of the keys to the accuracy of the CheyTac M200 Intervention’s accuracy is the chambering, and the cartridges around which the rifle is built are loaded with what are called “Balanced Flight Projectiles”.

In addition to the fact that they are loaded with CNC-machined solid-copper bullets (as described above) the rounds are designed to stay supersonic for longer, and in fact are designed to remain supersonic all the way to the target. 

This keeps the bullets out of the so-called transonic zone for longer. In the transonic zone, at which bullets decelerate below the speed of sound, they experience destabilizing shock forces that throw off their spin-stability, creating wobble that reduces accuracy. 

Therefore, keeping the bullets this rifle fires supersonic for longer, ideally all the way to the target, helps uphold a higher degree of accuracy than would be possible otherwise.

Are there better calibers for ELR shooting? 

As great as the .375 and .408 CT are for ELR shooting, there are many other calibers that can also be excellent for extreme long-range shooting. Some that come to mind include .50 BMG, which is a proven contender especially for anti-materiel applications, as well as .338 Lapua, which is a cartridge commonly encountered in sniper rifles and which is ideal for hunting, as it can dispatch effectively any game in North America especially with proper shot placement.
