The Cadex Defense Kraken is a multi-caliber precision rifle platform that delivers uncommon value, even in an industry which is known for uncompromising engineering and (if you can excuse the pun) precision.
While many ELR rifles are built around calibers like .50 BMG, .338 Lapua, and even more niche extreme-long range cartridges like .375 and .408 CT, the Cadex Defense Kraken offers you something few other platforms do: choice.
Let’s take a closer look at what, specifically, makes this one of the best precision rifle platforms out there at the current time.
You Don’t Need to Settle for One Caliber
With the Cadex Defense Kraken, it isn’t just about the fact that the rifle itself is available in a wide range of chamberings, though it is. With this rifle, you can take your pick of popular calibers for long-range shooting and hunting like .308 Winchester and 6.5 Creedmoor, along with:
- 7mm PRC
- .300 WM
- .300 NM
- .300 PRC
- .300 Rum
And, of course, this rifle is available chambered in extreme long-range staples like .338 Lapua. But it isn’t just that the platform can be built around them. This is a multi-caliber rifle platform that enables remarkably easy caliber transitions with a barrel swap.
In fact, this rifle sports a patented, innovative barrel-change system that can be executed very quickly and easily in the field, enabling you to swap between calibers with minimal shift in point of impact, introducing an element of flexibility into extreme long-range shooting that has existed only rarely elsewhere before.
The bottom line is the Cadex Defense Kraken doesn’t force you to make hard decisions about what caliber you want to pursue for ELR shooting right out of the gate, and delivers a great deal of flexibility so you can tailor the cartridge chosen to the application.
Moreover, the fact that this long-range rifle supports fairly common calibers like .308 Winchester and 6.5 Creedmoor, which are not particularly hard to find at gun shops, which are not overly expensive, and which support a wide range of sporting applications, is another big benefit.
What Else the Cadex Defense Kraken Offers
The multi-caliber design of this rifle, and the quick barrel swap design, are only two of the things to love about it. It supports numerous other features that add value as well.
- The Cadex Defense Kraken has a barrel with 5R rifling. If you’re not familiar with this type of rifling, it has lands and grooves that lack sharp margins, which not only reduces the surface area where fouling can hide, it makes the rifle a lot easier to clean as well. And, on top of that, this type of rifling reduces bullet deformation as the bullet passes through the bore, upholding a higher standard of accuracy. For some rifles it might not be worth it, but for a dedicated precision rifle or extreme long-range rifle, the edge goes to 5R rifling over conventional rifling. Plus, reduced fouling helps support a longer barrel lifespan, especially with routine care and maintenance.
- This precision rifle platform supports numerous attachment points because it not only has an M-LOK compatible chassis, it has sections of Picatinny rail over the barrel and around the sides of the chassis, offering numerous points of attachment for accessories like bipods, tripods and other shooting rests, slings (though this is a fairly heavy rifle), and other shooting attachments. There’s no shortage of real estate on this rifle for the purposes of expansion.
- The rifle itself offers tool-free adjustability for length of pull and comb height, so you can get a custom like fit in a matter of seconds, supporting a closer fit to the shooter for greater comfort and thereby greater accuracy downrange. On a similar note, this rifle also has a folding stock that reduces the overall footprint of the rifle, making it easier and more convenient to store and transport, not to mention more discreetly as well.
- It weighs between 14.9 and 16.4 pounds, making the platform relatively heavy and capable of absorbing no small degree of recoil, but it also is muzzle brake-ready, which gives you a lot of flexibility when it comes to recoil reduction, which can significantly impact how a rifle handles, especially one with a chambering such as .338 Lapua or .300 Norma Magnum.
- While most precision rifles and extreme long-range rifles are obligatorily right-handed, left-handed versions of this rifle are available for southpaws.
- Depending on what you prefer, this rifle is semi-customizable. It can be customized with two bolt knob styles (round and tactical) as well as your choice of a 20, 30, or 45 MOA top rail.
- For what it’s worth, you can color customize your rifle, and if you’re going to put this much money into a precision or extreme long-range shooting platform, you might as well be able to do so. More than 20 colorways are supported, giving you plenty of options for how you customize.
These are just a few of the features that make the Cadex Defense Kraken one of the best extreme long-range rifles; there are others, but these are the most salient features.
