About the Balanced Flight Projectiles of the CheyTac M200 Intervention Sniper Rifle

One of the core aspirations of the United States Armed Forces is to be able to engage an enemy at a range greater than that at which he can engage them. In essence, it’s a stick longer than your enemy has. You can land a blow and he can’t.

Naturally, since we no longer (usually) fight with sticks, the matter has evolved to encompass the realm of ballistics.

In the past, United States snipers have used rifles chambered in 7.62 NATO, which is very similar in ballistic performance and capability to .308 Winchester. It is a good cartridge, but severely limited with respect to range, and not very effective for anti-materiel purposes, though as an anti-personnel round, it is decent, but only at appropriate ranges.

The military moved away from the .30 caliber cartridge to a .50 caliber cartridge, especially for anti-materiel applications. The .50 BMG has been the standard here for a long time, but the Balanced Flight projectiles, specifically the .408 CheyTac of the CheyTac M200 Intervention sniper rifle, have shaken the dynamic.

Why Balanced Flight Matters and What Advantages It Offers

Despite the incredible raw power of the .50 BMG and its history of efficacy as an anti-tank round, there are two main problems.

One is that it has not been changed in roughly a century. The other is that it has never been subject to extensive testing to vet its actual performance as an extreme long-range rifle round. We know from use that it fills its role relatively well, but it has never been compared rigorously to other cartridges for the same application.

This issue gave rise to the .408 CheyTac cartridge that boasts the “Balanced Flight” projectiles which are the subject of this article.

“Balanced Flight” was thereby invented to meet the need for an ideal long-range cartridge which could arguably outperform the .50 BMG that was in such widespread military use.

Using software that could test all known ballistic parameters, engineers could predict, observe, and test projectiles according to their performance.

Notably, “Balanced Flight” parameters could be applied to .50 BMG to improve it, but when put head to head, the .408 CheyTac of the M200 Intervention sniper rifle outperforms it on muzzle velocity, overall effective range, accuracy, and most surprisingly, even power.

Ultimately, there are numerous ways in which the .408 CheyTac outperforms the .50 BMG.

For one, the cartridges are more compact and weigh 33% less (even more in the case of the .375 CheyTac which is also a suitable alternative for extreme long-range rifle shooting). This makes transportation and logistics more practical and less burdensome, as .50 BMG cartridges are notoriously bulky and heavy. Being smaller and lighter, this saves costs from a standpoint of raw material consumption.

Impressively, the .408 CheyTac actually carries more ballistic energy beyond 400 yards than the .50 BMG. This gives it an edge for extreme long-range shooting, especially as an anti-materiel round, for which the latter has so long reigned effectively uncontested.

Because of its greater muzzle velocity, the .408 CheyTac delivers a shorter time to the target and greater velocity at impact. This is one of the reasons that it is more accurate than .50 BMG.

The .408 CheyTac stays supersonic for longer, keeping it out of the transonic zone for longer, increasing accuracy. At the margin of the sonic zone, bullets are subjected to erratic shock waves that can considerably, adversely impact accuracy. Speed is an ally of a long-range cartridge in this case.

Another element of accuracy with this cartridge is the fact that it is loaded with CNC-machined, pure copper bullets. These bullets enjoy greater consistency in cross-sectional density as well as greater radial symmetry, both of which positively impact accuracy.

Being a lighter cartridge, .408 CheyTac also produces less primary recoil, which is another edge it has over .50 BMG.

All in all, in the hands of an experienced marksman, this cartridge is effective at engaging man-sized targets a mile and a half away, and as has already been stated, is a suitable anti-materiel round.

But it is not solely the cartridge, but the M200 Intervention sniper rifle that was designed for it, that makes it an excellent alternative to .50 BMG.

The rifle in question sports a removable barrel (which supports para-operations) which has a US-patented, unique rifling with an ideal rate of twist for the .408 CT. It also has a collapsible, adjustable stock to offer a custom-like fit to the shooter, regardless of who the individual is.

It is also suppressor ready, which allows for quieter operation and reduced recoil as well, and the design of the rifle, which can also accept a muzzle brake, improves on recoil reduction.

Moreover, the turn-bolt design improves accuracy and the platform does not expel gases into the operator’s eyes, improving ergonomics and helping to keep the reticle on target with a clear sight picture, should a follow-up shot be necessary.

The bottom line is this. It’s not just that the .408 CheyTac is one of the best extreme-long range anti-materiel rifle cartridges ever developed; the M200 Intervention sniper rifle is one of the most accurate, best long range rifles in production today.
