Advantages of the .408 CheyTac Over .50 BMG

The .50 BMG is an infamous cartridge with a long and illustrious service history. First introduced in 1921, the .50 BMG (today also known as 12.7x99mm NATO) was developed in response to the need for a powerful anti-aircraft cartridge that could be used effectively against vehicles in addition to personnel.

First developed for the M2 Browning heavy machine gun, this cartridge, with its impressive range (more than 2000 yards), immense stopping power (up to nearly 15,000 ft-lbs of muzzle energy), and ballistic energy retention even at extreme ranges, has been widely adapted to anti-materiel platforms in the years since its introduction

With that said, though it remains one of the best anti-materiel rounds in production, other modern cartridges, such as the .408 CheyTac, which is one of the two cartridges paired with the M200 Intervention rifle, have eclipsed it on certain bases.

Though this is in no way to suggest that the venerable.50 BMG is obsolete, by any stretch, but there are things that advanced modern cartridges like .408 CheyTac do better. Here are just a few of them.

Listing the Advantages of the .408 CheyTac

Official documentation from US Armorment to the United States Army lists numerous advantages that the .408 CheyTac cartridge offers over the .50 BMG.

  • The cartridge is more compact and lighter. It is the case that the .50 BMG is notoriously large, heavy, and expensive. It is easier to carry .408 CheyTac rounds in a more compact space and with relatively less fatigue than would be the case with .50 BMG. In fact, it is no small margin; the .408 CheyTac is much lighter, 33% lighter to be precise, than the former cartridge.

  • Even though the .50 BMG produces more muzzle energy, beyond 400 yards there is a crossover point and the .408 CheyTac will carry more ballistic energy to the target. On top of that, a .408 bullet will remain supersonic for longer, which confers its own benefits.

  • On the mark of remaining supersonic for longer, the .408 CheyTac will remain more accurate at greater ranges. At the transonic zone, the zone in which a bullet goes from moving at supersonic to subsonic speeds, there are unpredictable drag forces that can result in aberrations in bullet flight. The long and short of it is that the longer a bullet remains supersonic, the more accuracy it will exhibit. It’s best if a bullet remains supersonic all the way to the target.

  • Because of its greater effective range, the .408 CheyTac of the M200 Intervention is better suited to engage targets at extreme ranges beyond 2500 yards. It is more accurate, carries more energy to the target for more effective dispatch, and also produces shorter time to the target, too.

  • Despite these obvious advantages, because the projectile of the .408 CheyTac is lighter than that of the .50 BMG, it will produce less recoil, making it more accessible and easier to shoot accurately and effectively in the hands of a wider range of shooters.

  • Because it is more compact and lighter, it requires less raw material to manufacture a .408 CheyTac cartridge, despite the heavily involved machining processes.

All in all, in the hands of a trained shooter, the M200 Intervention, chambered in .408 CheyTac, can hit a man sized target at a range of 1.5 miles, and retains sufficient ballistic energy to dispatch such a target.

As it turns out, there are also advantages of the platform itself, the M200 Intervention, with which this cartridge is paired, and not just the cartridge itself.

While a wide range of platforms have been built around the .50 BMG over the years, such as the AR-50, here are some of the advantages of CheyTac rifles over these:

  • CheyTac rifles can be suppressed, which allows for quieter, more discreet shooting and easier disposition concealment. Suppression also offers the benefit of providing a slight mitigation to felt recoil, adding to the list of benefits of the cartridge itself, which produces less recoil than the .50 BMG in the first place.

  • The CheyTac M200 Intervention is highly adjustable and is designed to offer next-level ergonomics to the shooter, not just making it more comfortable, but offering a more custom-like fit to the shooter, which in its own way can improve proficiency with the platform.

  • CheyTac platforms feature a two-turn bolt receiver that offers superior accuracy than a semi-automatic receiver.

  • They produce less recoil as a result of an advanced muzzle brake system that considerably cuts back recoil energy and results in a more shooter-friendly platform.

  • Also as a result of the advanced muzzle brake design, these platforms do not vent gasses backwards toward the shooter, which is not only less uncomfortable for the shooter but keeps the sight picture clearer and is less distracting.

Ultimately, there are significant advantages not just to .408 CheyTac ammo, but to CT rifles like the CheyTac M200 Intervention that cannot be ignored. The cartridge offers numerous superior ballistic advantages and CheyTac rifles are adjustable, ergonomic, more comfortable to shoot and easier to shoot accurately with a shorter learning curve than many relatively comparable .50 BMG rifles.

These advantages can also easily be transferred from military use cases to civilian applications, especially with respect to the discipline of extreme long-range rifle shooting, also known as ELR shooting.

In other words, if you’re tossed up between some .50 BMG platform or a rifle chambered in .408 CheyTac, seriously consider the latter. Ammo may be more expensive and harder to find, but you can’t look past all of the relative advantages covered here.
